Tips for Posing Your Family for a Memorable Photoshoot
Capturing timeless family portraits is a cherished tradition that creates lasting memories for years to come. But how do you ensure that everyone looks their best and that the photos truly reflect your clients personality and connection? In this post, we’ll explore some tried-and-true tips for posing your family clients to achieve picture-perfect results.
Plan Ahead: Before the big day, take some time to plan out the logistics of your photoshoot. Choose a location that reflects your family’s style and interests, whether it’s a scenic outdoor spot, a cozy indoor setting, or the comfort of your own home. Are you taking multi generational photos? Are their any mobility issues? You don’t want grandma to have to hike up a mountain to your favourite photo spot. What is the shade like? Are you photographing teens or smaller kids? Being well prepared will ease your nerves leading into the shoot.
Plan Their Outfits: Coordinate outfits that complement each other without being too matchy-matchy. I will never suggest all white shirts and jeans! Two neutrals and two colours are an easy way to help your clients choose a colour pallette. My best piece of advice is to tell mom to pick her outfit first, and everyone else match her.
Embrace Natural Poses: When it comes to posing your family, natural is key. However, it’s easy for nerves to take over. I like to tell my clients that I got them, I’ll tell them what to do, and then I capture the natural candid moments in between. I start with a few of my favourite poses, and once everyone starts to relax, I start to encourage the family to start interacting and having fun together, such as laughing, playing, or sharing affectionate moments. These authentic moments often result in the most memorable and genuine photos, but the process can be a bit tricky to get there.
Focus on Connection: The most impactful family photos are those that capture the genuine connection and love between family members. Encourage your family to interact and engage with each other during the shoot, whether it’s through eye contact, hugs, or playful interactions. These moments of connection will shine through in the photos and create images that truly resonate with viewers.
Be Patient and Flexible: Finally, remember to be patient and flexible throughout the photoshoot process. Children, in particular, may have short attention spans or be easily distracted, so be prepared to go with the flow and adapt as needed. Reassure the parents that their kids’ playful behaviour is nothing new! I don’t like to take breaks because once I’ve “lost” the kids it’s impossible to get them back.
