Paddleboarding: A Summer of Connection and Joy on Kalamalka Lake

This summer, I discovered a new passion in paddleboarding that brought me closer to my loved ones and energized my spirit. After a seven-year break, I was reminded of the serenity that comes from gliding across the water. I had almost forgotten how much I enjoyed it. I live near one of the most beautiful lakes and for years have felt like I don’t get to enjoy it like I should.

Why Paddleboarding Became My Go-To Activity

Paddleboarding is more than just a fun way to spend time on the water; it’s a full-body workout, a meditative experience, and a chance to connect with the world around you. With every stroke, you engage your core, arms, and legs, building strength and balance. But beyond the physical benefits, paddleboarding offers a unique sense of calm. There’s something incredibly soothing about the gentle lapping of water against the board and the rhythm of paddling that clears your mind and brings you into the present moment.

The Magic of Kalamalka Lake

Of all the places to paddleboard, my absolute favorite is Kalamalka Lake. With its stunning turquoise waters, lush surrounding hills, and quiet coves, Kalamalka feels like a hidden paradise. I spent every Tuesday this summer paddling with my good friend Jasmine, and those after work paddles became the highlight of my week. We’d glide across the lake, sharing stories, laughing, or just soaking up the sun.

Connecting with Friends and Family

Paddleboarding quickly became more than just a personal activity; it became a way to connect with my friends and family. I got to spend some quality time with my kids and felt like it was a great way to bond. Plus they were forced to be off of their phone and talk to me (ha!)

The Benefits of Paddleboarding

The benefits of paddleboarding go far beyond what I initially expected. It’s a low-impact workout that improves balance, builds strength, and boosts cardiovascular health. More than that, it’s a perfect way to de-stress, as the repetitive motion and natural setting help to clear the mind and elevate mood. I found that my regular Tuesday paddles were a fantastic way to break up the week, offering a much-needed escape and a sense of rejuvenation that carried over into the rest of my days. And I felt like I was getting to enjoy my hometown and my favourite lake even if I’m stuck at a desk 40 hours a week.

Why I Had the Best Summer Ever

This summer was one of the best I’ve ever had, thanks to the heat, the lack of smoke, but also because of paddleboarding. It may sound corny, but every paddle session was a little gift—a chance to immerse myself in nature, enjoy the company of friends and family, and savor the moment. It reminded me of the simple joys in life: the warmth of the sun, the coolness of the water, and the laughter shared with loved ones.
