What Veggies to Plant in Your Container Garden

If you have small outdoor space like me, and you want to plant veggies this year, I have you covered. Just because you don’t have an acreage doesn’t mean you can’t grow veggies on your patio.

1. Compact Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a staple in many home gardens, and fortunately, there are plenty of compact varieties perfect for container gardening. Look for determinate tomato varieties, such as Patio, Tiny Tim, or Tumbling Tom, which thrive in containers and yield delicious, juicy fruits without taking up too much space. I’ve had lots of success with Cherry tomatoes, but they will take over when they’re happy.

2. Leafy Greens

Leafy greens like lettuce, spinach, and kale are excellent choices for container gardening. They’re fast-growing, versatile, and perfect for harvesting as baby greens for salads or allowing to mature for hearty leafy meals. Plus, their shallow roots make them well-suited for containers of all sizes. I always plant these in the same pots and they do very well in the full hot sun.

3. Herbs & Mint

Fresh herbs add flavor and freshness to any dish, and they’re incredibly easy to grow in containers. Basil, parsley, cilantro, thyme, and mint are just a few options that thrive in pots on balconies or windowsills. Not only do they enhance your culinary creations, but they also fill the air with delightful aromas. Be very careful with mint, it’ll take over your garden if you plant it in the ground. Keeping it in pots ensures you won’t be cutting mint until you enter the retirement home.

4. Peppers

Peppers, both sweet and hot varieties, are another excellent choice for container gardening. Compact pepper plants, such as patio or dwarf varieties, produce bountiful yields of colorful peppers perfect for adding a kick to your favorite dishes. Just ensure they receive plenty of sunlight and warmth to thrive.

5. Cucumbers

Believe it or not, you can grow cucumbers in containers too! Look for compact or bush varieties that don’t require extensive sprawling space. With proper support, such as trellises or stakes, you can enjoy a plentiful harvest of crisp cucumbers straight from your urban garden.

Container gardening opens up a world of possibilities for urban gardeners. Whether you’re growing tomatoes, leafy greens, herbs, peppers, or cucumbers, there’s something incredibly rewarding about nurturing your own green space in the midst of the urban landscape. So, roll up your sleeves, grab your pots, and start planting – your urban garden adventure awaits!
